Memento Mori Donuts

At some point, Souling (the precursor to trick-or-treating) on Halloween started getting a little out of hand, becoming a rowdy and irreverent affair for people who wanted free food, rather than the serious exchange of food for prayers.

One woman, fed up with this nonsense and seeking to move the tradition back towards piety, started cutting holes in the middle of her soul cakes and frying them.

She would hand these deep-fried rings to her “soulers” asking them to meditate on their eternal souls as they enjoyed their doughnuts. The treat’s ring shape was a symbol of eternity and the fact that they were hot… well, I’ll let you draw your own conclusion.

Regardless, a more delicious Memento Mori reflection has yet to be invented!
